| Dartmouth subpoenaed in loan investigation
HANOVER, N.H. (AP) _ New Hampshire's Dartmouth College has been subpoenaed as part of New York state's investigation of the student loan industry. The subpoena, dated February 14 and recently made public, was brought by New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo. The subpoena addresses the college's arrangement with Bank of America that allows the bank to offer "affinity" credit cards to Dartmouth students and alumni. These cards allow individuals to give back to their alma mater or to another charitable cause as they spend. Dartmouth is among over 80 colleges and universities that offer affinity cards to their students in conjunction with Bank of America, according to the bank's web site. Cuomo has alleged that these card programs may represent a conflict of interest if they encourage colleges to promote the banks' lending programs.

Ren Ci under investigation for financial discrepancies
It is believed that the matter involves millions of dollars of interest-free loans to several companies over the past decade. The second largest charity under the Ministry of Health, after the National Kidney Foundation, Ren Ci will lose its Institution of Public Character (IPC) status on Nov 27, when it is due for renewal. This means that while it can continue to accept donations, donors will not enjoy tax exemption. Ren Ci, which has 120 nursing home patients and 324 chronic sick patients, will continue its day to day activities. A statement from the ministry on Wednesday said a review of the charity had 'identified some possible irregularities in certain financial transactions involving Ren Ci and certain external organisations'. The ministry will start an inquiry 'to establish a fuller and better understanding of these irregularities'.

MLK III: 'Maybe I'll endorse in the Clinton-Obama race. Maybe I won't.' Wednesday, January 30, 2008, 06:42 PM The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Action has shifted away from the Baptists in the Georgia World Congress to the Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner for Democrats. The hall is packed. State Democratic Party chairman Jane Kidd put the crowd at 2,700 tickets sold at $250, and another 1,700 bleacher seats sold at $25. They'd been hoping to break 5,000, but the withdrawal of John Edwards this afternoon probably put a lid on turnout, Kidd said. Even so, this is clearly the biggest gathering of Democrats since 2002, rivaling recent Republican bashes. Among the first people we ran into was Martin Luther King III, who said he might possibly issue an endorsement in the presidential campaign now that it's down to two people.
Clinton campaign starts 5-point attack on Obama
Nothing about ending the ever widening wage gap that turns the middle class into the lower class and gives 70% of the wealth to only 10% of the population. Her answer to illegal immigration, give them all driver's licenses and citizenship. Nothing about paying fines or back taxes. Nothing about making them learn english and integrating. Nothing about punishing the employers and landlords that enable them. Nothing about increasing border, port, and airport security to ensure that illegal entry does not occur. Her policies are flawed, foolhardy, and unsustainable. They are the product of all her years of experience where she consistently follows the same failed policies. Her inability to change, think in new ways, and adapt to an ever changing world means one and only one thing.
Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce pulls two off panel
As a Chamber member I invest annual dues to pay for business support services for large and small businesses, as well as good policy that will reflect what Chamber members want. I am curious to see if my annual dues are part of some illegal transition within the Chamber or part of a PAC that members are unaware of. Are they contracting a certain congressman's ex C.O.S.? The Chamber is funded heavily through membership dues and special events, meaning, without members there is no Chamber. Without members, Terry and Ken cannot maintain the lifestyles they have become accustomed to. One is the puppet master and the other the puppet. Let's get leadership without arrogance like Terry, and leadership with a backbone, unlike Ken. Kudos Caller for breaking the story! Kudos to Damon for wanting to check the books.

Owner ecstatic that Rolo will live
Lori Moreland, of Golden, applauded the judge's decision and gave Hagan credit for standing up for dogs all around Colorado. But she cautioned that "anytime a neighbor is irritated with your dog, they can still call an animal control officer," so dog owners are going to have to "stand our ground." Jeff Hersch, 60, of Denver, said he was surprised at how Arvada handled the case. "It scares me," he said. "There must be a better way to do this." He said he thought the case could have been handled with arbitration. Graber's options included ordering Rolo destroyed, ordering him to live somewhere else, and requiring professional dog training as well as dog-owner training for Hagan. The judge ordered the city to inspect Hagan's yard to make sure that Rolo can't get out of the 6-foot cedar fence.
