Growing health center gets financial shot in the arm

That is, her health is not always the greatest, and she lacks medical insurance at her job.

"I used to want to be rich," said Sexton, of Charlestown. "Now I just want insurance."

Sexton has the next best thing, at least. Her county is committed to try to help anyone back to health. The Family Health Center of Clark County has expanded, yet again, so much that it is short on space, yet again.

Sexton is one of at least 2,000 patients the center will serve this year. It offers everything from vital surgery to flu shots, eyeglasses, screenings, even referrals to other services. Typically uninsured, patients pay on a sliding scale, if they can pay. The place helped arrange free medicine for Sexton for a digestion problem.

"Without them, I don't know what I'd do," she said.

Conman Foster jailed in Australia

AUSTRALIAN conman Peter Foster, who escaped from military custody in Fiji at the height of the December 5 takeover, has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in jail yesterday after pleading guilty to a money laundering charge in a Brisbane court.

Peter Clarence Foster, 45, of the Gold Coast, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court in Brisbane to a charge relating to fraudulently obtaining just over $300,000 from the Bank of the Federated States of Micronesia, an AAP report stated.

Justice James Sholto Douglas heard the matter in the Brisbane Supreme Court yesterday, Court officials revealed from Brisbane.

He was sentenced to four-and-a-half years jail but will be eligible for parole after two years and three months.

Foster, who has described himself as a human headline, was arrested by Australian Federal Police officers in February this year after he arrived at the Brisbane Airport on a flight from Vanuatu.

Dan Rather Backs 'Outstanding' NYT Journos on McCain Hit Piece

The idea of appearing on television, radio or print I have no interest in at all. I have turned down offers as I like anonymous and have nothing to prove.

It is all kind of sad when you think of Dan Rather shilling on Chris Matthews, because his nowhere cable network went tits up. He still grabs for the light when he should be grabbing for God's Light.

Normal people just like to fade away from the world and are content to do it.......others like Dan Rather are addicts feeding low self esteem.

I would wager when President Bush leaves office it will be about the last time the world sees of him as he likes being a guy. His old man only showed up for the kids........there is vast difference between Bush and Rather.

Dan Rather like Bill Clinton should have quit when they were ahead.......now they are quit upon and looking like the old actress looking for her close up.

Chase Card Services Announces ChaseHealthAdvance financing options and ...

WILMINGTON, Del. - Chase Card Services, a division of JPMorgan Chase & Co. [NYSE: JPM], announced today that it has finalized the acquisition of Unicorn Financial Services, a leading patient financing company. The combined company officially launches its expanded set of patient financing products today as ChaseHealthAdvance financing options.

Rising medical and dental costs have created a need for new and adaptive healthcare financing options. In addition, the demand for elective procedures ranging from dental, vision correction and cosmetic procedures to veterinary care for pets, is increasing at a rapid rate. The knowledge base that Chase has built in providing consumer credit to millions of credit card holders prompted Chase to develop ChaseHealthAdvance.

"As a premier and trusted financial institution, Chase is able to offer affordable, flexible options for those looking to finance healthcare procedures, as well as provide competitive service fees for providers" said Hugh Bleemer, general manager, ChaseHealthAdvance.

Time Runs Out On Talks On Drugs For Poor Countries

The goal of the talks is to produce guidelines that would encourage research and development of affordable drugs to treat diseases prevalent in poor countries while respecting intellectual property rights of big pharmaceutical firms.

The industry argues it needs strong revenues from drug sales to finance research and development into new treatments, including for diseases prevalent in developing countries.

The pharmaceutical industry has condemned the WHO draft plan and richer countries home to much of the global drug industry remain cool to the plan.

But health advocates, including aid agency Doctors Without Borders, or Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), say that development of drugs for poor countries is lacking.

MSF said the talks, staged by the Intergovernmental Working Group for Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property (IGWG), saw some encouraging progress.

Red Hat/Cygnus record run lost amid Sun/MySQL billion-dollar hoopla

Two reasons: (1) Red Hat had a large market cap in the days of 1999-2000 stock market and (2) Cygnus was earning in 1999 what very few open source companies are earning even today, almost 10 years later. At the end of the day, revenue and growth drives valuation, and Cygnus had revenue and growth.

Does that almost decade-long reign say anything about the real or perceived values of open source companies today?

It says more about how rare it is to find high-quality companies.

What's your best guess as to how long we'll have to wait for the next billion-dollar-plus open source deal?

Exempting Red Hat from my answer (because I cannot comment or speculate on Red Hat's future), I would not be surprised to see another $1B deal of some sort in the next 12-18 months.

Hollywood is getting hit where it hurts

Some people in Los Angeles are finally having to cut back on the bare necessities of life. I hear there has been a precipitous drop in business for tanning salons, trichologists and pet astrologers. The already unstable property market in the city is looking as shaky as the earth-quake-prone ground the properties stand on. A television producer told me that he has even made his wife stop her Botox injections. This measure has had the dual benefit of cutting doctor’s fees and shopping bills since his wife now won’t leave the house with her face in its natural state.

When smaller means more

Five to 10 years ago, real estate perquisites largely were based on perceptions of deluxe upgrades, such as granite counters rather than laminate and master baths with double vanities.

Today, you can add to the mix things such as spalike baths, wine cellars, walk-in pantries, outdoor rooms, coffee bars in master bedrooms, work stations for charging cell phones, and finished garages.

Some of the impetus for better detailing of homes has come from furniture manufacturers. They are listening to their customers who say they want cabinets that look like furniture in the kitchen and bath, more efficient storage and display for plasma televisions, and computer stations or desks that gather and hide all the cords.

Furniture-style vanities for the bath are available from Kohler Co., and you also can choose your sink and faucet.

American Idol'': Separate but Unequal

American Idol has a clearly stated mission over the next three weeks: Winnow down its current crop of 24 semifinalists into a lean, gender-balanced pack of six men and six women. Because if there were, say, eight women and four men heading into the March 11 finals, all hell would break loose in the Idol nation. There'd be strongly worded e-mails, a perilous dip in the show's ratings, and perhaps even rallies where fans could destroy their cherished Daughtry and Carrie Underwood albums en masse. Or at least that must be the great fear of executive producer Nigel Lythgoe and his cohorts.

How else to explain the silly insistence on parity of the sexes? After all, this is a TV talent search, not a college athletics department; Title IX doesn't apply. And it's not like the show's goal is to reinvent Robbie Carrico's former prefab band, Boyz n Girlz United.
