| Unsecured Internet purchases could prove disastrous
Students who regularly make online purchases from campus computers or from the university's wireless network might want to take some precautionary steps before punching in their credit card numbers. “If [students] are using the encrypted wireless [network], I think that's fine," said James Shook of Technology Support Services. “[But] I don't think I'd be doing that on the visitor's [network], which anyone can get on."Students can obtain a password for the secured wireless network at www.nss.appstate.edu. Appalachian State also offers free anti-virus software with built-in firewall and anti-spyware protection at www.antivirus.appstate.edu. Students transferring data should do so from secure Web sites, which are signified by “https" in the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) or a secure lock graphic, said Director of Technology Support Tom M.

Short-dated Bonds Stay Low After Tepid Auction Response
Testimony from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke had little impact on the market, as he largely reiterated the message that came from Fed Vice Chairman Donald Kohn Tuesday. Kohn, and Bernanke, said the danger that the U.S. economy will weaken further is a bigger worry than higher inflation. .
Firefighter sues Mishawaka over alleged sex discrimination
MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) -- Mishawaka's only female firefighter has filed a sexual discrimination lawsuit alleging that co-workers made derogatory comments. Dale Francis filed the lawsuit yesterday in U.S. District Court in Fort Wayne. She alleges that some firefighters posted sexually derogatory cartoons and notes in stations to harass her into leaving. The suit also says some male firefighters jeopardized the success of emergency runs by refusing to help her lift patients and equipment and refusing to speak with her. Francis still works for the fire department in the city east of South Bend. Mayor Jeff Rea declined to discuss the lawsuit. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) .
George Osborne's green gimmick
George Osborne thinks he has an answer to our saving malaise: a green individual savings account. This is being referred to as the "Gisa" (no, we don't know how to pronounce it, either, though we think it might rhyme with Lisa). Investors could apparently save thousands by putting their money into tax-free "green Isas'' (which would have a bigger allowance of, say, £9,000, rather than £7,000 for ordinary Isas) and reduce carbon emissions at the same time. It is not just savers who will benefit -qualifying companies will be boosted by billions in extra revenue. To qualify for inclusion in a Gisa, companies would need to gain a green kitemark. The likes of Marks & Spencer and GlaxoSmithKline, which are committed to big reductions in their carbon emissions would probably be eligible.
When flights go awry, get refund information in writing
Q: I would like to request your help in resolving an issue with AirTran Airways. I flew from Atlanta to Savannah, Ga., recently. But my return flight to Atlanta was canceled for mechanical reasons, and I was offered two options by a station supervisor. I could either spend the night at a hotel at AirTran's expense and fly out the next afternoon, or I could rent a car and drive to Atlanta, again at AirTran's expense. Since I had a morning business meeting the following day, I chose the second option. The following day I mailed my receipts for $124 to the station supervisor by certified mail. I also called the number on his card and left numerous messages. For two weeks I received no response from him or AirTran. Then a credit for $39 — the cost of the return flight — showed up on my American Express card.
