Your Hometown News - Biloxi

Biloxi's still in the middle of a state of emergency. Yet, the city's mayor is focusing some of his energy on Biloxi's pre-Katrina "to do" list. For instance, when A.J. Holloway gave his state of the city address on Monday, he said transportation projects that were put on hold after the storm had to become a priority again. Brad Kessie reports on Holloway's 15th State of the City address.

Mid-Size SUVs: The Good And Bad When It Comes To Safety

The newest crash test study of mid-size SUVs has both good and bad news for those who drive these big rigs. And for some HUMMER owners, you have to be wondering if the "safe as a tank" perception some have of your ride is truly deserving.

The good news? The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's latest crash tests found 8 of 9 mid-size SUVs earned a "Good" rating in front end collisions. That's a big improvement from the Institutes last test in 2001 where only half the mid-size sport utes rated "Good."

The bad news? For the first time, the Institute tested side and rear-impact crash protection, and automakers have to make their sport utes perform better. Especially in rear-impact, where only 2 of 9 got a "Good" rating.

Amazon invests in billing service

Amazon.com has made an investment in Bill Me Later, a service that allows consumers to make purchases online without using a credit card. Terms weren't disclosed

Amazon said in a statement Tuesday that it will make Bill Me Later's service available on its Web site. Seattle-based Amazon is the world's biggest online retailer.

Office 2007 update beats release target

Microsoft said Tuesday that it has released the first major update of its Office 2007 productivity software at least one month ahead of its projected target.

The software maker said Office 2007 Service Pack 1 (SP1) will crash less, is easier to use and is more secure than the original program that was released to consumers in January.

Microsoft had said it planned to release Office 2007 SP1 in early 2008, but the company finished updating the software sooner than it expected.

Exposed: The Long, Cruel Road to The Slaughterhouse

It never ceases to amaze me how hundreds of thousands/millions of people will support this kind of cruelty toward life, by ignoring its existence and by purchasing animal products with the only consideration being point-of-purchase price tag, yet become outraged by pregnant females in crisis undergoing safe, legal abortions, and support candidates who want to make abortion illegal and unsafe once again.

Twisted thinking is all I can say …

Bubble bursting?

No wonder the Fed has chosen to repeat the formula today.

But this episode seems more serious than the dotcom one however, and it probably won't be resolved quite as easily.

Why? Because in 2000, we only managed to soften the landing from the crashing of the stock market bubble by creating a housing bubble. That supported American consumer spending, (enabling Asia to carry on exporting).

Alas this time there are no more obvious bubbles to create.

So today's cut in interest rates will struggle to support consumer spending at the levels necessary to act as a motor to the global economy.

Indeed, fiscal policy will struggle to do that either.

If you want to know the challenge facing the world, it is summarised by the American savings ratio - the proportion of disposable income saved by American households.

WSI board: Time to get cracking and correct the mess

Could anyone who has followed the months-long soap opera not believe that serious action - including administrative restructuring - needs to take place now? There is enough blame to go around, but this is not a blame game. Sometimes it is best to start over, and the management culture and structure at WSI must be changed. The agency directors are the only ones who can do it.The North Dakota Century Code is clear: "The board shall appoint the director of the organization. The director is subject to the supervision and direction of the board and serves at the pleasure of the board."This is where Gov. John Hoeven also is involved. More from the Century Code: "The governor shall make the necessary appointments to ensure the term of office of members (of the board) ... ."While there doesn't seem to be a mechanism for the governor to fire members of the board, he needs to strongly encourage them (or continue to do so) to take action that will stop the juvenile nonsense at WSI.

'Til debt do you part

As wedding season descends upon those gleefully in love, happy couples ruminate endlessly about color schemes and flower choices.

But there is one topic couples mightily try to avoid: money.

"It's a huge issue," said Mike Allen, marriage and family life minister for the Catholic Diocese in Lexington. "Most statistics show that (disagreement about finance) is one of the prime causes of marital conflict.

"Money in a strange way is a very personal thing," said Allen, who counsels engaged couples as part of his job. "We have a lot of fears related to money."

Because many people are getting married later in life, he said, many of today's couples have the advantage of having some real-world experiences with finances before they get hitched.

News Of The Day

More importantly, when all is said and done, I have to wake up in the morning and look myself in the face.

I am proud of how hard I worked, the reasons I ran, and the way I conducted myself.

In short, I end this campaign with my self-respect and integrity intact.

I entered this race not because of my personal ambitions but because of my passion for justice and an overwhelming desire to see this county's system of justice work better than it has.

Because of this, I have called Rich to congratulate him in his victory, and want him and everyone else to know that it is my sincere hope that he is able to succeed in bringing much needed changes to our justice system, and in the way the District Attorney's office works.

Many people have asked me what I intend to do now.

I-Team Investigation: Social Security Crisis

Thousands of people in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana are waiting right now for benefits they earned, but can't get. We're talking about Social Security disability benefits, something you pay for in taxes deducted from every paycheck.

The I-Team's Hagit Limor has been looking into a huge backlog that's costing some people their lifelong savings. She found delays of up to four years from the time people apply. They can't work due to their disabilities but are too young for social security, so they need disability pay.

Hagit first reported last year that Uncle Sam hasn't hired enough judges to hear these cases. Since our report, the government's taken some action, but Tri-Staters desperate for help tell us, it's not nearly enough.

Paul Stegeman survived a TWA plane crash in Cincinnati in 1966, a tour in the Navy during Vietnam, and three decades working for corporations like Cincinnati Bell and CG&E.

Barack Obama and Me

I sure wish American would start evaluating the facts, the credentials and the experience of this candidate, before we make the massive mistake of handing the presidency to more of the same aka John McCain. If we want a Democratic nominee that will take us to the White House....VOTE HILLARY CLINTON. And my vote will proudly be awarded to you. Congratulations on wading the storm and I look forward to the victory that will be March 4th.

I have to agree with some of the earlier writers. I'm an Obama supporter, and there's some fascinating juicy stuff in this piece. But, there's a few points that make you lose credibility... but they lead to honesty. The jive talking line, the fact that he didn't get to respond to your negative article (or this article), all of it shows a narrowness of your perspective.
